Renowned for creating his own fabrics, designer Yoshiki Hishinuma pairs the workmanship, attention to detail, and labor-intensive processes of traditional Japanese textile-making with innovative techniques and the synthetic materials to produce stunning results. In the 1980’s, he designed a series of garments he called Kite Clothes and Air Clothes that incorporated the element of wind as part of the design. This concept led to the evolution of unique and fantastic shapes as displayed in this parachute dress from the collection of Isabella Blow.

For its first time ever, Pringle of Scotland enlisted David Benjamin Sherry, who has shot for the likes of i-D,Discount Ed hardy belts, Dazed & Confused, and Another Man, to photograph its Spring ‘12 campaign. Sherry also joined Kati Nescher and Suvi Koponen in front of the lens as one of the models for the menswear campaign. Behind The Scenes At Joseph Altuzarra’s First-Ever Lookbook Shoot
Dec 7, 2011 Evisu
Photos: Alex John Beck for Altuzarra
It’s a growth market for Joseph Altuzarra. The New York designer presents his first Resort collection today (created, in part, to meet the increasing demand from retailers), and with it, his label’s first branded materials. Last week, Altuzarra convened a team that included photographer Steven Pan (a former assistant of Steven Meisel’s), models Danielle Zinaich and Aurélie Claudel, and his longtime friend, stylist Vanessa Traina, at Milk Studios to shoot the new lookbook. (It’ll debut on Style.com, along with our collection review, later today.)
“Generally, the inspiration was very nineties,” Altuzarra said. (Sure enough, the inspiration board was a collage of nineties-era ads and looks from Jil Sander and Gucci.) “I was a little tired of things that were so self-consciously fashion-y. I wanted something that was a lot more natural.” That extended as well to the casting of Zinaich and Claudel, two industry veterans (and, as it happens, old friends) who are less flavors of the moment, more lifers.
“I was really interested in working with women,” he continued. Danielle and Aurélie “both have kids, they’re both married, and they’re in their thirties. I think it’s more what Altuzarra is about—it’s about women, and not so much 16-year-old girls. [Altuzarra is about] a real personality. The fact that there was a connection between them and they were really friendly, I think that that was something that was really interesting.”
The collection itself Altuzarra describes as “a segue between the Fall show and the Spring show.” That means a chance to reprise a few recent greatest hits. Good news for those coveting the parkas that were a major statement for Fall: They’ll return, reworked, in lighter-weight cotton.

The Doctor (And Her Bags) Are In
Nov 27, 2011 Evisu
For her latest collection, Olympia Le-Tan checked herself into Paris’ Museum of the History of Medicine, a nineteenth-century gem tucked upstairs at the Descartes Medical School in Saint-Germain, the site of her presentation Thursday night. It was a telling venue. “People around me were taking strange medications and I sensed a disease vibe in the air,” Le-Tan said. So she and her team set to work assembling first-aid-kit carrying cases, and copying classic-edition covers of psychology tomes and the great novels of madness, drugs, and disease, including Wuthering Heights, Mrs. Dalloway, Valley of the Dolls, and Erich Segal’s tearjerker, Love Story. She called the collection Still Ill, after a song by her beloved Smiths. But if she lamented the persistence of sickness, she offered a few palliatives, too. There were pillbox clutches of “Brozac” (”Which will help your friends put up with you,” she wrote in a collection statement) and “Wiagra” (you can imagine), as well as for Olympia-brand petroleum jelly. And she couldn’t resist styling a few syringe hair clips and nurse uniforms her first foray into clothing. (Her sister, Cleo Le-Tan, modeled one.) These were tucked in between the antique scalpels and other strange tools of medicine’s past in the museum’s display cases as André Saraiva, Olivier Zahm, Garance Doré, and Catherine Baba nibbled Red Cross cupcakes and took each other’s temperatures.
